A routine traffic stop by Washoe County Sheriff’s Office deputies led to the arrest of a man and the recovery of an explosive device found inside a car.
According to the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office in an online post, deputies contacted a driver identified as 36-year-old Kenneth Francis during the stop. Francis had an outstanding warrant for failure to appear. Deputies also reported finding brass knuckles in his possession. An explosive device was then discovered inside the car.
Members of the regional Consolidated Bomb Squad responded to the scene, safely recovered the device, and rendered it safe, according to the post.
Francis was transported to the Washoe County Detention Facility, where he was booked on a felony charge of possession of an explosive or incendiary device in or near a public area. He also faces additional charges, including possession of a dangerous weapon, driving with a revoked license, no proof of insurance, and operating an unregistered car.
Officials said they appreciate the work of the Consolidated Bomb Squad, which responds to and safely resolves explosive threats while supporting public safety across the region.
As a safety reminder, authorities say if people encounter something they suspect is an explosive device, they should not approach, touch, or move it. Instead, they should evacuate the area and contact law enforcement immediately.
