A program that helps children entering foster care with something as simple as new clothes is back this month, and organizers say the need continues across Northern Nevada as they ask the community to help.
The Reno Rodeo Foundation launched its two-month-long Spring Denim Drive on May 1, expanding a long-running effort aimed at providing new clothing and essential items to children entering foster care across 14 counties in the region.
Since 2016, the Denim Drive program has supported 4,258 children and delivered $1.28 million in assistance, according to the foundation.
Now, the focus is on keeping that momentum going. The foundation is asking for monetary donations, new clothing and essential items, and additional partners willing to serve as drop-off locations for donation boxes.
Organizers say community support plays a key role in continuing the program and helping children entering foster care gain immediate access to necessities, including clothing and hygiene items.
The Reno Rodeo Foundation, established in 1986, is a Nevada-based nonprofit serving children and families across Northern Nevada. Since its inception, the organization has distributed more than $8.3 million through programs supporting vulnerable youth.
In addition to the Denim Drive, programs include scholarships for high school graduates and college students, Rodeo Wishes for children with medical conditions, and Reading Rooms designed to provide comfort for children in family court settings.
The foundation also hosts annual fundraising events that support its programs, including Bingo Brunch on Aug. 23, the Biggest Little Shootout on Sept. 12, and a Texas Hold ’Em Poker Tournament on Oct. 3.
Community members can take part by donating money, contributing new clothing and essential items, or signing up to serve as a partner or drop-off location.
