For the first time since 2014, Reno is electing a new mayor.
Incumbent Hillary Schieve is termed out.
As of 4 p.m. Wednesday, Kate Marshall has taken a strong lead in the primary so far.
The former lieutenant governor says she owes it all to the voters.
"I am so grateful and honored," Marshall says. "I mean, these results really belong to the people of Reno, to the people who showed up and voted and volunteered and gave a little bit of their money and knocked doors and, and campaigned."
The top two vote-getters in the nonpartisan Reno Mayor race advance to the general election, and second place is hotly contested.
Kathleen Taylor and George "Eddie" Lorton are neck-and-neck.
The latter is asking his supporters to hold their breath and wait out the next few election updates.
"Stay tuned," Lorton says. "We'll still have election week. So still pay attention to the updates, and it can go either way. I mean, it's an honor and a privilege to be able to have the opportunity to support the people."
Both candidates pointed to their dedication to show voters they care on election day.
"We were at four different locations because I care about this community and they care about me and our community," Lorton says.
"I didn't sleep last night because I stayed up to see what they had to say and what was important to them," Marshall says.
2 News Nevada asked Reno voters what issues they'd like to see their future mayor address.
Many say they want to see a better transportation system and less data centers in the city.
Mary Leon says she wants to see more resources used to address homelessness.
"We have a lot of homeless people wandering the streets and, you know, people getting hit. You know, maybe some more lighting on dark streets," Leon says.
2 News Nevada reached out to Kathleen Taylor for this story.
She was not available for an interview on Wednesday since she was at the Reno City Council meeting, representing Ward 1.
Her campaign manager says a statement will be released when there's a clearer picture of her standing in the race.
