Voters in Washington, D.C. are heading to the polls to select party candidates for mayor and congressional delegate. This primary marks the first time in a generation that residents vote for both positions in the same election. In a predominantly Democratic city, the party's winner is expected to come out on top in November. The mayoral race has gained broader attention since Muriel Bowser decided not to seek reelection. Democratic front-runners Janeese Lewis George and Kenyan McDuffie hope to replace her. Central to the campaigns is the city’s relationship with the Trump administration. Tuesday’s primary includes ranked choice voting for the first time, which could delay results.

Georgia lawmakers are expected to try to clean up an election mess of their own making when they return to the Capitol this week for a special session. The election system used throughout the political battleground state relies on a QR code printed on ballots to tally the votes. Legislators passed a law two years ago barring the use of that barcode for the official vote count beyond July 1 of this year, but no replacement method of tabulating votes was ever implemented. Meanwhile, the secretary of state’s office and the State Election Board have further muddied the waters by issuing conflicting guidance about how votes should be cast and counted.
Swiss voters have rejected a proposal to cap the country's population at 10 million. The initiative, led by the right-wing Swiss People's Party, was seen as a move against migration. Preliminary results showed nearly 55% opposed the measure, with a turnout of almost 59%. Critics warned it could harm Switzerland's ties with the European Union. Switzerland isn't an EU member but is surrounded by EU countries. The proposal's defeat reflects ongoing debates about immigration in Europe. Swiss democracy allows voters to directly influence policy through referendums, highlighting the country's unique approach to governance.
