Joe Ernst

The Washoe County School District has announced the retirement of Superintendent Joe Ernst, effective July 7th of this year.

He says the decision came after thoughtful reflection and a desire to spend more time with his family

“Education has been such a meaningful and fulfilling career for me,” Ernst said. “While this work has meant so much, this next chapter will allow me to spend more time with my wife and children and enjoy the moments that matter most.”

In a statement, school board president Adam Mayberry said in part, “We are grateful for Superintendent Ernst’s steady leadership and his decades of service to education and to WCSD.”

The WCSD Board of Trustees will discuss at a future meeting the next steps in naming the next superintendent.

In his 32-year career, Ernst has filled numerous roles in the school district, including teacher, coach, assistant principal, principal, chief accountability officer and area superintendent.
