A rekindled campfire that had grown to a much larger size was tackled by a multi-agency response today in Sierra County.

According to a recent post from the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) on Facebook, a report of smoke was called in just southwest of Calpine in the Sierra Valley this afternoon.

Multiple agencies, including the U.S. Forest Service, Sierra County Fire and the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office responded to the fire. Reports say that when agencies arrived on scene, the fire had grown to around 30 by 60 feet in size.

A nearby tent full of camping gear was a total loss.

SCSO identified the person that was responsible for the campfire. They say that person has been fully cooperative during the investigation.

Officials would like to use this incident as a reminder to the public to never build campfires on top of combustible materials such as wood chips, pine needles, leaves or dry grass - as hidden embers could smolder and reignite hours later.
