The Central Nevada Health District says Walker Lake has been placed on a Harmful Algal Bloom (HAB) advisory following a surface bloom.
Officials also say if you see water that looks discolored or smells bad, stay away.
Algae blooms happen when water levels are lower, there are higher levels of nutrients like phosphorus, and the water doesn’t circulate well.
High levels of cyanobacteria have cause the Division of Environmental Protection to raise the HAB Advisory to an HAB Warning for the Lahontan Reservoir.
